Overall, the percentage of elderly people is expected to rise significantly across all regions by 2035. Wales is projected to have the highest proportion, while Northern Ireland will likely have the lowest.
In 1985, the percentage of people aged 65 and over ranged between approximately 12% and 18% across the regions. Wales had the highest proportion, close to 18%, while Northern Ireland had the lowest at around 12%. England and Scotland had similar figures, both slightly above 15%.
By 2035, the elderly population is expected to rise considerably. Wales is projected to experience the highest increase, reaching nearly 27%. Scotland follows closely with around 25%. England and the UK as a whole will see their figures rise to about 23%, whereas Northern Ireland, although increasing, will remain the lowest at just under 20%.

With the increasing number of elderly individuals, there is ongoing debate about whether they should live with their families or in retirement homes. While some argue that staying with family ensures emotional and financial support, others believe that care homes provide specialized services for the elderly. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my viewpoint.
Many believe that elderly individuals should remain with their families because it fosters emotional well-being. Family members can provide companionship, reducing loneliness and depression. Additionally, it is often more economical, as living in care homes can be expensive. In many cultures, taking care of parents in their old age is seen as a moral duty.
On the other hand, some argue that retirement homes offer better healthcare and social interactions. Professionals in these institutions provide medical support, ensuring that elderly individuals receive proper care. Furthermore, many retirement communities offer recreational activities, which can enhance their quality of life. In contrast, families may struggle to provide round-the-clock care due to work commitments.
Both options have their merits, but I believe that the best choice depends on individual circumstances. If a family can provide proper care, staying at home is beneficial. However, if professional medical assistance is required, retirement homes can be a better alternative.
