Changes to the IELTS Academic Test

Starting from August 10, 2023, candidates no longer need to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 in each individual test skill for IELTS Academic. Instead, a 6.0 overall score is now sufficient, making it easier for candidates to prove their English proficiency.

Fee Increase

As of January 2024, the IELTS exam fee has risen to INR 17,000 for both pen-and-paper and computer-delivered tests. IELTS Life Skills (A1 and B1) fees have also increased to INR 16,050, while IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration now costs INR 17,250.

Surge in Demand in India

Post-COVID, IELTS bookings have surged by 10-15%, and IELTS coaching registrations have increased by 56%, particularly in tier-II cities. The number of IELTS test centers in India has also grown, reaching 74 locations.

One Skill Retake Option

Since March 2023, IELTS test takers in India can now retake only the specific module in which they scored the lowest. This saves time and money as they no longer need to retake the entire exam.

In August 2021, IDP took over 100% of the IELTS business in India from the British Council, making IDP the sole administrator of IELTS testing in India.

Modes of IELTS

Paper-Based Test

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are paper-based, and the Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an examiner. Answers are transferred to an answer sheet after the test.

Computer-Based IELTS

In the computer-based test, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on a computer, and the Speaking test is still face-to-face. Results are available within 5-7 days.

IELTS Exam Sections and Syllabus

Listening

The Listening section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English. You will listen to four recordings and answer ten questions per recording. You will have 10 minutes to transfer your answers after the 30-minute listening time.

Reading
